Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) concluded an MOU with the Port of Newcastle to build a clean energy economic zone in Australia toward the realization of a decarbonized society.

  • MHI's technologies and knowledge related to decarbonization contribute to building a clean energy economic zone for ports
  • Aiming for future decarbonization of Australia through cooperation with various clean energy projects

On the 12th, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and the Port of Newcastle, located in the state of New South Wales in the southeastern part of Australia, have signed a contract with the Port of Newcastle on the occasion of the visit of the Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Bowen to the port. We signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on efforts to realize a clean energy district. Starting from the Clean Energy District, we will explore the possibility of supplying clean energy technology, exporting clean energy products, and further cooperation with clean energy projects across all energy sectors in the Port District to the entire Hunter region in the southeastern part of the state. We aim to build a world-class clean energy economic zone in Australia and achieve decarbonization in Australia.

The specific activities of this clean energy district project include inland and offshore wind power development, power transmission, clean energy production, storage, export and bunkering. Working with Australian companies, as well as leveraging the expertise of global companies in key markets for clean energy, such as Japan, is essential to advance these plans. Designated by the Australian Government as the Hydrogen Hub of New South Wales, the Port of Newcastle is committed to developing, storing and exporting a clean energy economy.

Commenting on the MOU, Port of Newcastle CEO Craig Carmody said: “This project will play a central role in the Port of Newcastle cargo diversification strategy. We will provide and support not only within this port, but throughout the Hunter region.”

Hitoshi Kaguchi, Executive Vice President, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, said, “We are very honored to be involved in the large-scale development project of Newcastle Port, a major port in Australia and a promising future hydrogen hub. We possess a variety of technologies that are considered necessary for realizing a hydrogen hub at the Port of Newcastle, such as ammonia/methanol production plants and ammonia/liquefied CO2 carriers . The port has long been an important base for Japan as a resource shipping port, and through this project, we will work together with the port to contribute to the decarbonization of Australia and Japan.”

MHI Group will contribute to the creation of a clean energy economic zone centered on the Port of Newcastle by providing technologies and knowledge related to decarbonization that it has cultivated so far, and contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society in Australia.
